Samsung has recently rolled out a new update to monitor blood pressure for its current smartwatch models, Galaxy Watch Active 2 and Galaxy Watch 3. The new firmware update unlocks the new feature and thousands of users can immediately try to use it. The update rolled out in February and it may take a number of weeks to complete the deployment. So, if you haven’t received the update, you will eventually get it. Apple launched the Watch 4 in 2018 with ECG app that could measure irregular heart rhythm. For people with cardiovascular issues, the feature could potentially prevent major illnesses if treated immediately. The company has been working on blood pressure feature and Samsung delivered it first. Apple filed a patent that described a method for blood pressure measurement. The wristband has built-in pressure sensors and the device could non-invasively measure blood pressure. We thought that the feature will be available on Apple Watch 6, but it wasn’t true. The two newly update Samsung Galaxy Watch models has joined the Withings Scanwatch and Fitbit Sense for blood pressure measurements.
The blood pressure monitoring would be the standard feature of future Galaxy Watch models. However, it may not be the only major change of the software. There’s a strong rumour that the Tizen OS will no longer be available on future Galaxy Watch models. Any device maker would realize that developing and implementing a proprietary operating system can be a huge challenge. With Tizen OS, users have access on much fewer quality apps. For users of Wear OS, they can benefit from the thriving ecosystem, where new apps are available regularly. Wear OS and WatchOS are far ahead of Tizen in terms of apps availability. Samsung’s possible decision to use Wear OS for its future smartwatches could be a good move. By adopting Wear OS, Samsung could divert focus, because Google takes all the development tasks. Tizen OS first appeared in 2013 and there are a few interesting things to learn. Because Wear OS is an open-source platform, it is possible for device makers to make their own enhancements. Fossil worked with Google to enhance the poor battery management of Wear OS. Fossil’s custom battery modes work nicely and such a workaround would be available for Samsung as well. Today, if you pair Apple iPhone or a non-Samsung Android smartphone with the Galaxy Watch, it is important to use the Wearable app from Samsung. If future Galaxy Watch models use Wear OS, integration with non-Samsung Android smartphones should be seamless or at least, much easier.
However, Wear OS itself isn’t without issue. Google isn’t paying much attention to the development of the platform. Although Wear OS is an open source software, there are still limitations on customizations to ensure compatibility with other Android and Wear OS devices. It means, Wear OS is still somewhat beyond the control of Samsung. If Wear OS has an issue or glitch, Samsung will need to answer to customers, while waiting for fixes from Google. Although it takes an extra work to develop and improve Tizen OS, the proprietary platform is completely under the control of Samsung.
