OnePlus Watch

OnePlus will finally participate in the smartwatch market and this year, the Chinese company will release the OnePlus Watch. The CEO, Pete Lau, confirmed earlier rumours about the new smartwatch. The new wearable from OnePlus is definitely coming, although we only know some basic details. Lau tweeted that the new device will come early this year. It means, the OnePlus Watch will directly compete with market leaders, including the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 and Apple Watch Series 6. The company will also release a fitness tracker device, called the OnePlus Band.

Release Date

OnePlus hasn’t announced an exact release date, but we could be certain that it will be available in early. The period between January and March should be a perfect launch window for the Chinese company. It is possible that the OnePlus Watch will be released along the OnePlus 9, the next flagship model from the company. OnePlus usually releases a brand-new smartphone model every six months. It means, the actual release date could be somewhere in mid-March. We first heard about the OnePlus Watch in August last year when the device appeared in the listing of Infocomm Media Development Authority. Pete Lau’s tweet on December 22 is a direct confirmation about the device.

OnePlus is known for delivering high-end features in its relatively affordable devices, especially compared to the likes of Samsung and Apple. Unfortunately, we still don’t know anything substantial about the upcoming OnePlus Watch. However, we could safely assume that it will be available at lower prices. The entry level model of OnePlus Watch could be less than $250, which is an interesting price point. However, given that it will be the first smartwatch model from OnePlus, it is possible that the company will offer an even lower price. OnePlus may market its smartwatch and fitness tracker, just like OnePlus smartphones. It means, these wearables will deliver high-end features for much less.

Again, we have no specific details about the brand-new smartwatches, but it should use the latest version of WearOS, an operating system from Google for wearable devices. Fortunately, OnePlus has tweeted a sketch about the design of the OnePlus Watch. Previous rumours said that the OnePlus Watch will have the Snapdragon Wear 4100 chipset, which ensures decent performance, because it’s the latest hardware from Qualcomm. The chipset offers four A53 cores with 12nm manufacturing process, which is less efficient that those found in current smartphones. It’s effectively the same with Snapdragon 429 for older, affordable smartphones. It could be quite powerful for a smartwatch, but it doesn’t really represent a true engineering magnificence. However, it is possible that the OnePlus Watch will have the Snapdragon Wear 4100+, which includes a co-processor. Compared to the earlier Wear 3100, the Wear 4100+ have 85 percent faster CPU, 85 percent faster RAM and 250 percent faster GPU. There will be noticeable power efficiency as well, with 42 percent lower power usage when scrolling notifications, 35 percent more efficient when playing music streaming through Bluetooth and 25 percent more efficient when using GPU.
